Why is this reference price so low?
Hi. I took a break from selling on Amazon for a few months. When I came back and tried to reactivate my listings, there was one triggered a "Potential high pricing error" alert.
This exact same item is available right now from only two Amazon sellers, who've priced it at $68 and $108. I want to price it ini the middle, but Amazon isn't allowing me to do so.
In the Inactive Offers Overview, when I enter $90 as the price, I get this message: "Your Offer price is greater than the Reference price(s) provided." The minimum price is $26, and the maximum is $41. "Source of reference price" is the list price, $27.50.
How is it possible that I'm not allowed to list a price that's lower than the highest price being asked by another Amazon seller? Why is my maximum price of $26 lower than even the lowest price currently being offered, $68?
The answer to How and Why might be "(shrug) That's Amazon." So I guess aside from being curious about the logic behind this pricing system, I'd like to know if I can do anything about it. Thanks.

High Price alerts are generally triggered only when a listing is added or updated; although the bots will slowly crawl through to catch others. That is why you can't add at a price that is already there.
As for the Reference Price, looks like they are using a "List Price" for an item no longer produced, so the price doesn't account for basic things like inflation, increased value, market demand, etc. I see this all the time in books that have been selling for $25-30, suddenly can't list for over $4.25, because that was the price in 1974.
The system is broken. And Amazon doesn't care.

Like others have said, sometimes setting a minimum / maximum will help. Other times there is no way to win.
I will give an example. There is one item I sell which Amazon keeps flagging for pricing violations. I buy this item directly from the manufacturer. I am a verified distributor of this product.
The item costs me $3.20. Shipping will typically cost me $4. Amazon makes about $1.5. Thereabouts. So this is about $8.70 in costs.
Amazon will not let me sell this product for any more than $1.20. if I try to charge more I get hit for a pricing policy violation. There is no way I can find to get around this issue.
So I sell these like crazy on eBay. Amazon clearly does not want me to sell this product on Amazon.

Amazon includes the cost to ship in the total price. You can have the lowest product price but still be penalized when you rightfully charge for shipping. It’s very frustrating and Amazon does not care whatsoever.

List it on another platform. Bots gone wild or semi-functional.

I had to delete a book today from a listing that had Amazon as the only available seller - for purchase and it flagged my listing as high potential at $7. Eliminate the other sellers.

What I have learned to do is to completely remove that listing from Amazon, raise the price a couple of dollars, and sell it on another site so that they get the cut instead of this idiotic platform. It usually takes a bit longer to sell, but it has always sold.

I have removed over 2,000 items because of this nonsense, cost of each between $50 and $200 and put them on ebay, because I will not sell an item for $3 to make the bots happy, Amazon is sending all their business to other sites, do you think they care NO? But one day they will! If buyers come to Amazon looking for products they can't find they will go somewhere else and they will not bother looking in the future on Amazon.
