Return label not pre-paid - how did it happen?
I am returning a FBM item, value £30, UK return address
The label I was issued automatically by Amazon was not pre-paid. I thought this was obligatory for items less than £100.
Any ideas why/how? All I can think of is that the seller tricked the system by initially setting the item price to over £100, exempted the item as being over £100 then reduced price to the correct price. Does the Amazon system cope with such “tricks”?
it contains a rechargeable lithium battery, maybe that’s it?
Any other ideas?

Yes it will be because batteries are hazmat and RM dont necessarily accept them

It depends on the return reason, not all returns are pre-paid, can you advise what reason you put for the return.
If it is Hazmat, and a valid return reason for free return, then the seller is responsible for providing you with a pre-paid label suitable for Hazmat product. Amazon uses Royal Mail and Evri for their return labels, and neither of these carry Hazmat products.

However, I understood anything hazmat went to the FBM seller for approval (at least it used to).
All we would do is look at the return reason, if buyer was liable we would provide an unpaid label, if we were, we’d arrange a relevant label.
So if the return reason should mean the seller is liable for the return postage, you should query it and you should get your return postage refunded as well.

A quick update. The seller offered me a £15 refund to keep the item but the reason I wanted to return it was because the battery would last just 10 minutes so it was useless. So I refused and requested a label again.
I waited a few days then went to A-to-Z. Amazon took a whole week to reach their decision.
The decision was that I must return the item to the seller for a refund!
I have now reminded them of their own policy which states that for hazmat items, the seller MUST provide a pre-paid label.
It’s a matter of principle now. They award decisions to scammers for non-delivery when so must evidence is provided but they refuse this a-to-z and ignore their own policies.
