Can I change the brand name from “Generic” to my handmade brand (not registered yet)?

Hi all,

I’m a handmade seller and created my own listings for some custom products.

When I first listed them, I honestly selected the option “This product does not have a brand name,” thinking it was the correct choice at the time. As a result, the brand was automatically set to “Generic.”

But I’m the original creator of these listings — and I’m also the maker of the products myself.

Is it possible to request a brand name change in this case?

Since I haven’t registered my brand yet, will requesting to change “Generic” to a brand name now cause any issues for my store or listings later when I complete Brand Registry?

Would love to hear from other handmade sellers who’ve dealt with this. Thanks so much!

Technically you can, but you will lose any and all from the Generic account (such as reviews). Any listing will need a new SKU, so it's like you are starting over. There are probably more issues that I am not aware of.

Hello @Seller_njM9KGHwbSIeg,

Thanks for reaching out. Once a brand is applied to an ASIN, the brand cannot be changed per the Generics Policy and the Product Detail Page Rules policy. If you decide to add your brand to your products, you will need to create a new ASIN.

I hope this information is helpful!

You would think, right?

Even following the procedures if you don't have an actual Trademark registered it is a bear to get them to allow you to use your OWN brand name, photos etc.

I have not gone the TM route because it seems pointless here because they do not truly protect you and I have tried the "register to sell a brand" - being my OWN brand, my packaging, same website, labeling ... all the things.

Stil not approved.

Amazon is truly awful when it comes to this issue.

Oh BTW, since your items are handman, request a GTIN exemption. Look up how to that. If your exemption is approved, you will be able to list the items as your seller name.
