MFN: Buyer returned different/ broken item.

Hi everyone.

This is regarding an approx £150 item sold MFN.

The buyer returned with reason 'box was wet'.

They sent back the same box which shows no signs of water damage and inside it, they had enclosed an old broken/ faulty copy of the item that they purchased from me.

These are the steps that I intend to take:

*Issue a partial refund reflecting the value of the item they returned.

*Message them to explain why a partial refund was issued.

*Report the buyer for violating returns and refunds policies.

*File a SAFE-T claim if the buyer opens and wins an A to Z claim.

Does this all sound right?

The only other thing to consider would be that, given that they seem to be acting in bad faith, they will probably leave negative feedback. I don't think I woulld be able to get such feedback removed, right? Or would someone listen and remove it in the case of a buyer that has been reported for violating returns/ refund policies?

Thank you.

I would also take photos of the packaging and the item you have received back.

I encountered a similar situation where a customer initiated a faulty return, sending me an old defective device they had purchased elsewhere, likely a year or two old. Strangely, they returned it in a new retail box that I had initially shipped to them. Despite reporting the issue to various teams on Amazon, no action was taken. I refused to issue a refund to the customer and provided evidence of the product serial number I had shipped versus the old faulty return, which showed signs of wear and tear. Unfortunately, Amazon did not offer any assistance in resolving the matter. It's a recurring issue, with about 4 or 5 similar cases in 2023. Reporting the problem through opening a case doesn't seem to result in any consequences for the customer, and the background processes remain unclear.
