Generics Error 5885 on Listing that IS NOT generic

Perhaps if I post this here, I will get some help from someone. my 15+ phone calls with seller support have been a huge let down.

We are receiving generics error 5885 on listings that are not generic. We typically set up our listing prior to ordering products to check and make sure something isn't wrong with the Amazon listing (because things like this happen ALOT on this platform). This is a perfect example of why you should check that. So on quite a few different brands (Native, Tree Hut, Estee Lauder, Etc., BIG NAME BRANDS), we are receiving the above generics error when setting up an offer on one of their listings. Seller central won't even investigate the 5885 issue until you provide them real world images showing that the product is not branded. In this case, the product is branded and I believe the generics error is some form of internal glitch. It does not apply to our situation. The product has a brand, and the listing is not generic, however, we still receive this code.

In an effort to resolve the issue, we purchased small quantities of these products so that we can provide the real world images. Just to get the employees over at seller support to allow us to move on to the next step. When we provide the pictures, they respond with "Sorry that product is not generic, we can't fix your issue". OBVIOUSLY its not generic. I stated that from the start. The error we are receiving is NOT APPLICABLE to our situation. Its some kind of problem in the mechanics of seller central.

Anyway, we were about to purchase units of a new product tonight and ran into this again. I tried explaining the issue to seller support for the 14th and 15th time this evening. No luck. Although I do not wish anyone else to have to deal with this issue, I hope some of you are experiencing this same error so we can push for a resolution.

Indeed, your question has nothing to do with "Generic". You want to list brands. For beeing able to do that without risk of deactivation you need:

1. Invoices from authorized distributors (and NOT receipts you get when buying in a store or on a retail website)

2. "Letter of Authorization" from the brand allowing you to sell on Amazon

So I would say you were rather lucky that you couldn't list these products. Otherwise you would have been hit with IP complaints and your account would have been suspended.

Hi there @Seller_kjJzAzeCTbcHB- thanks for posting this situation for assistance from the forums community.

Error 5885 arises when the system detects that changes are being attempted on a Generic product detail page, or a party is attempting to add an offer to a Generic product detail page. The Generic Product Policy does confirm that if you try to change a product detail page or add offers on another seller’s generic product, you will receive a listing error.

From reading your post, it sounds like the core of the issue may be correctly matching the products you are attempting to list to ASINs from the brands in question. Selling branded products on Amazon will require approval from that brand, and the category you are looking to sell in may require approval from Amazon to sell in a give category or sub-category. You can read about the process for these approvals on this help page.

I hope this helps clarify the process, but do let me know if you have other questions on this that I can help address here on the forums.

Thanks,

Danny
