New, Used-Like New, or Renewed: What condition guidelines mean (and why they’re important)

Here at Amazon we have condition guidelines that must be applied to every non-digital product we sell. Have you ever wondered why it’s so important to enter Condition Notes every time you upload and list a new item?

We can think of a couple good reasons why:

  • It delights your customers. The first step toward ensuring a great experience for both buyer and seller is an honest appraisal of the new, used, refurbished or collectible items you list for sale on Amazon.co.uk..
  • It helps protect you. Stating the correct condition of the product helps protect you from A-Z claim sand chargebacks.

Below we’ve listed an overview of the condition types, to ensure you always pick the correct condition for your products:

New: Just like it sounds—this is a brand-new item in perfect condition.

Certified Refurbished: A product that has been inspected and graded by a qualified manufacturer or a specialist third-party refurbished to like-new working condition with no visible cosmetic imperfections when held 12 inches away. The item is backed by an additional 1-year limited warranty provided by the supplier, in addition to buyer’s statutory rights. The products may be packaged in a generic box and come with relevant accessories as expected for a new product, with exceptions, if any, mentioned on the product detail page. Certified Refurbished items are sometimes referred to as pre-owned or open-box products.

Used - Like New or Open Box: An item in like new condition, without any scratches or scruffs and in perfect working condition. The original protective wrapping may be missing, but the original packaging is intact and in good condition with minor damage possible. The item should be free of any defects and in perfect working order, just as it would be had you purchased a brand new item, just the package is no longer sealed. Instructions are included.

Used - Very Good: A well-cared-for item that has seen limited use and remains in good working condition. The item may show some limited signs of wear with small scratches or cosmetic blemishes.

Used - Good: The item shows wear from consistent use, but it remains in good condition and functions properly. Item may arrive with damaged packaging or be repackaged.

Used - Acceptable: The item is fairly worn but continues to function properly. Item may arrive with damaged packaging or be repackaged. Signs of wear can include aesthetic issues such as scratches, dents, and worn corners. The item may have identifying markings on it or show other signs of previous use. Item may be missing some parts or accessories such as screws (in the case of furniture) or a mouse or USB cable (in the case of a laptop).

Collectible: Must be signed, a limited first edition, out of print or have other desirable qualities that could reasonably be assumed to increase the item’s value to a collector. Provide a detailed description of the collectible aspects that justify the special value. To see the full details for all condition types, including unacceptable and prohibited items, please visit the Condition Guidelines help page.

"Collectible: Must be signed, a limited first edition, out of print". That is ludicrous. Just because a book is out of print does not mean it is collectible. Probably out of print because no-one wanted to buy it in the first place.

Amazon should monitor descriptions more carefully, & ban such cynical things as "Used-as New. BRAND NEW", 'May be ex-library'; 'Might have underlining". We all know the usual suspects.

"Used - Acceptable" - a meaningless category, especially if no description is added. Why not the standard grades: Fair or Poor, with a requirement that a reason for the grading is given. It would benefit potential customers no end.

One thing that frequently crops up in these forums is whether a product bought from a retailer, or even from Amazon, then re-sold on Amazon should be classed as used or new.

It would be useful to have a definitive answer, so premium support (i.e. sellers on this forum 😀 ) can answer.

Would it not make more sense to have separate guidelines for BMVD and other categories?

I believe that the vast majority of used items are in BMVD (books and discs, basically).

'Refurbished' and 'open box' do not apply to books and very rarely to discs other than those containing computer software.

Also 'missing parts' (in the sense of missing pages of text) can never be acceptable in books.

The product editing pages have changed over the years in ways they make no sense for books or discs.

In books, for example, there are numerous options for battery specifications, EU Toys Safety Directives, Subtitles, BBFC Ratings along with other attributes that are irrelevant for printed books.

It seems to me that Amazon has adopted a one-size-fits-all approach that creates confusion rather than clarity when it comes to BMVD, especially books.
