FAQ for VAT-Registered Sellers

How do I enter my VAT ID number?

You can enter your VAT ID number quickly and painlessly through our website.

Open Seller Central and click on Settings > Seller Account Information. Find the selection Business Location and click on the Edit button. There, you can enter your VAT ID number and the country where your business is located. Our website’s VAT ID entry system is formatted to be compatible with government requirements. (Your information will be verified, although this check will not immediately influence your ability to enter your VAT ID number.)

Please adhere to the format requirements:

  • The tax ID for any party liable to account for VAT must be provided by an EU member country, Switzerland, or Liechtenstein.
  • VAT ID numbers from the EU must begin with the 2-capital letter country code from the country that issued it (e.g. Germany = DE, France = FR).
  • The number cannot contain any empty spaces, special characters, or other non-alphanumeric characters.
  • The information you enter (business location, company name, VAT ID number) must exactly match the information on the tax certificate from your tax office.
Important: By providing your VAT ID number, you agree to comply with the following terms and conditions:
  1. The VAT ID you provided to was issued to the business you operate and whose official place of business lies within an EU member country.
  2. All transactions that are processed through your seller account will be associated with the company and corresponding VAT ID number you provided to
  3. Your VAT ID number and all additional information are valid, correct, and current. You are required to promptly update any information in the event that it changes.
  4. All information you provide to us, including your VAT ID number, will be uploaded, processed, and saved according to the rules and regulations in your participation agreement and privacy policy.
  5. reserves the right to request additional information from you to verify the validity of the information you provided for your seller account (including your VAT ID number) through official means. You therefore agree to provide such additional information upon request.
  6. also reserves the right to charge for any taxes not taken into account if the VAT ID you provided is found to be invalid. In this instance, you therefore irrevocably agree that your bank account or credit card may be charged for these back taxes.

By entering your VAT ID number, you confirm that you have read and agree to be bound to these terms and conditions.

Why is it not accepting my information?

Possible errors when entering your information include:

  • Your VAT ID number is invalid or expired.
  • Your business location or business name are not identical to the information in your current VAT certificate.

Please check that the information you entered matches exactly once more using the official certificate from your tax authority.

Important: If after three attempts your VAT ID information is still not accepted, for security reasons any further attempts will be blocked by our system. If you continue to receive errors, we will gladly personally assist you (see below).

What should I do if my information is still not accepted?

So we can help you as quickly as possible, we’ll need a copy of one of the following documents from you:

  • Proof of registration as a party liable to account for VAT
  • Any other official document from your tax authority that indicates your VAT ID number

Please send one of the documents listed above via email attachment to Seller Support.

Why am I suddenly paying more in fees (VAT)?

Based on information in the EU data bank, the VAT information in your seller account could no longer be verified, so your VAT ID number was automatically deleted by our system. Possible reasons for this include:

  • The VAT ID number is invalid or expired.
  • Your business location or company name are not identical to the information in your current VAT certificate.

Amazon requires correct, current information to be able to calculate the fees for sellers without VAT registration.

What should I do if important information regarding my VAT registration changes?

If your tax information changes (business location, business name, or VAT ID number), please notify your tax authority of the change as soon as possible so your new information can be entered correctly. Once you’ve done this, update your information in Seller Central under Settings > Seller Account Information with your new VAT registration.

If the information does not match exactly, you will receive an automatic notification email with more precise information.

How can I be reimbursed for VAT fees?

You can request to be reimbursed for additional VAT fees that were assessed due to a missing VAT ID number. To begin this process, contact Seller Support and send an email attachment with the current VAT certificate from your tax authority. After your request has been processed, you will receive a voucher for the reimbursed fees.
